Swami Vivekananda believed that human being’s highest nature was divine. How one reaches that understanding was the goal of his life and teachings. This book interprets Swami Vivekananda’s approach to this human development as the “Vedantic” and “Manliness” approaches. (Today we may understand this “Maniless” as the idea of the “Spiritual Warrior.”) The authors argue that it is through these approaches, or practices, that Swami Vivekananda sought to enable us to reach our divine potential.
This booklet is an edited version of the article ‘From a Small Shrine to the Universal Temple’ by Swami Ananyananda published in Consecration Ceremony Souvenir released during the consecration ceremony of the new Universal Temple at Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai in the year 2000. Swami Ananyananda, the former editor of Prabuddha Bharata, brings out the historical journey of Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai from its humble origins at Flora Cottage (near Vivekanandar Illam), where Swami Ramakrishnananda installed a small picture of Sri Ramakrishna he had brought with him, to its present-day location in Mylapore. This book will be of great value to the devotees and well-wishers of Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai and to those who wish to learn about its history.
In this book the author deals with different arrays of thoughts and problems of philosophy and religion, their ups and downs in connection with the ever evolving phases of human societies, their harmonies and disharmonies, their various distinctive characteristics, and also their divergent ways of approaching the ultimate goal.
